For the 2015 League of Legends World Championship, I worked as a concept artist, matte painter, and environment designer, helping create the visual backdrop for one of the largest esports events in the world.
The challenge was finding a visual language that balanced photorealism with the stylized aesthetic of League of Legends. To achieve this, I developed a monochromatic battlefield covered in black ash, punctuated by towering spires that erupted from the landscape and surrounded the Nexus at its center. The goal was to create an environment that felt both epic in scale and unmistakably tied to the world of the game.
Because many of these visuals were designed to be displayed across massive stadium installations, the artwork had to be created at an extraordinary scale. Some of the final matte paintings exceeded 24K resolution and were designed as fully panoramic environments, wrapping around entire arenas and immersing audiences in the world of the championship.
The project remains one of the largest environments I have ever created, both in terms of physical scale and the size of the artwork itself.
