For Halo Wars 2, I worked with Blur Studio to help visualize the Gravemind, the massive Flood intelligence that serves as the central consciousness of the species. While early concepts existed, many of the details were still undefined, leaving an opportunity to explore how the creature might feel at an enormous scale.
To develop the design, I looked to references such as beached whales and other large organic forms, focusing on the textures, weight, and unsettling biological details that have long defined the Flood. The challenge was not simply to create a monster, but to create something that felt ancient, intelligent, and vast enough to command an entire species.
The final paintings were created at 8K resolution and included both frontal and top-down views of the creature, providing the team with detailed visual references that could be used across multiple shots throughout the cinematic. The project remains one of my favorite opportunities to combine creature design, worldbuilding, and matte painting within the Halo universe.
